A theatre exhibited motion pictures here at least as early as 1914. It continued to do so until at least 1926.
It appears to have made way for Our Lady of Pompeii Church by 1926.

The Carmine Theatre is listed in the American Motion Picture Directory 1914 – 1915 at the address 23 Carmine Street.
The Film Daily Yearbook;1926 edition lists it at 21 Carmine Street with a seating capacity of 600.
There is a remarkable painting of this theater titled CARMINE STREET THEATER by the famous turn of century artist John Sloan.

Ironically there is a Nun walking by the theater looking disapprovingly at children peeking in. Ironic because the building was removed and replaced by a large church which still stands at this site. Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Book Shop is currently across the street which ironically sells enormous numbers of cinema books every day.
Sloan painted the theater in 1912 so it was open then. I would like to hear from anyone who knows when it opened.
