Royal Theater

The Royal Theater opened in 1920. It was an 800 seat theater that was reduced to 400 seats by installing a plywood partition mid-way through the auditorium. This was done during the depression years because of a dwindling audience and to save on heating costs. I don’t know the closing date of this theater but it was still operating in 1953.

Showmen’s Trade Review, Jan. 10, 1953: “The Royal, Royalton, Ill., was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lingenfelton, of Marion, Ill., to Clifton King of Mt. Vernon, same state.”

There are two theaters on the 1926 map, but based on the description, I am positive that this was the brick building at 113 S Main. It’s still in very good shape, and seems to be used as a car repair shop.
