The Donley County Leader shows that Homer Mulkey came to Clarendon in 1904 and became one of the outstanding photographers in the region. He sold his art gallery in 1910 and opened up his first movie theatre in Clarendon. At the time of his death in 1941, he owned two theatre houses in Clarendon including the Cozy.

According to this article about efforts to restore the Mulkey, the theater opened in 1946 as a rebuilt version of an earlier theater on the site, the Cozy, which was destroyed by fire: View link. The theater was named for a Mr. Homer Mulkey by his widow; Mr. Mulkey operated theaters in the Clarendon area.

Does anyone know the root of the Mulkey name? It’s the only one with that name in the database.

through blurry eyes and a heavy heart i enjoy yet another dream my grandfather lived and meant to share. days, nights and weekends spent at the sandell drive-in and the mulkey “downtown” are all too vivid and missed by this ol' TX kid…(and especially the boathouse)
though time have pulled us apart my heart is with you Giggie…
