Flag Theatre - Hutchinson KS 1996 (2)

Single screen theatre in the downtown section of Hutchinson, located on North Main Street at E. First Street. Originally known as the State Theatre when it opened on July 2, 1936, it had a seating capacity for 490. It was destroyed by fire in 1958.

A new 400-seat theatre was built, using the outer walls of the former State Theatre and it opened as the Flag Theatre on November 24, 1959. It is now home to live productions, including children’s theatre, and is Kansas' only festival stage complex. The Flag Theatre is also used for meetings and conventions, and is available for rental for public and private functions.

This theatre was operated by Commonwealth who had it open in the winter months and the drive-in during the summer.

Boxoffice, Nov. 23, 1959: “Hutchinson, Kas. - The New Flag Theatre, a luxury-styled theatre which Jay Wooten in association with Commonwealth Theatres has rebuilt out of the shell of the old State Theatre, will open Monday (23) for the trade, press, radio and TV. The 400-seat theatre is probably the only new house to open in Kansas this year, and the owners have poured a considerable chunk of money into giving this town a top-quality theatre.”
