Cine Ideal

Located in the now ‘alternative’ and trendy Bairro Alto area of the city centre, the Cine Ideal opened in 1907. In recent years it was re-named Cine Paraiso and was in use as a straight porn cinema during daytimes and early evening where it also attracted a gay male audience. After 10pm it screened art house films.

In 2014, it was renovated to the plans of architect Jose Neves, aided by a Euro 500,000 grant, and reopened in August 2014 as the Cine Ideal again. It screens four different programmes a day, consisting of art house films, classic movies and Portuguese films.

In spite of current use as porno cinema, this is probably the old of Lisbon’s movie theatres still in use. Cine-Paraíso is in a small base-room of an old building of Chiado’s area, and it still have small beautiful details such as the wooden chairs, etc.

During last years, several people have been tried to change the terms of its programme, with independent cinema, various initiatives, etc. Unfortunately, all that is frustation, and every time one of those initiatives falls apart, porno cinema returns… til when?

you walk into an upper cafe lobby area buy a ticket and go down stairs where you walk into the balcony level of a big 1950’s style auditorium. there is little decoration, the balcony seats approx 100 and overlooks the stalls area.
the seats are vinyl or leather (easy to wipe down) its a shame its mostly used for porn as it has a huge screen and is a well preserved auditorium

After a 500,000€ renovation this cinema reopened in September 2014 as the Cinema Ideal.

Each day there are four different shows, primarily art house and Portuguese films.
