The Bowl Drive-In was opened April 1, 1953 with Piper Laurie & Tony Curtis in “Son of Ali Baba” and Rock Hudson in “Horizons West”. In 1955 it was operated by Seymour Levins. The drive-in closed in 1979 but is listed in the 1980 drive-in log. Since closing the screen was taken down in 2005 and the site became an industrial park.

Stopped by the other day. It’s located on the West Haven/New Haven line behind a Dairy Queen “restaurant”. In the vast acreage of weeds is trash, lots of pavement trails and directly in front are huge concrete blocks with the remains of metal fastening of what I presume were lightposts.
I guess it’s not going to become an industrial park.

Barely down the street at the former Bowl Drive-In site, developer/businessman Joseph “Chick†Celentano is clearing land for the construction of a Penske Truck terminal. Not only will the site house the trucks, but also they will be registered in West Haven, boosting the tax base of both the city and the Allingtown Fire District.
Nothing of the drive-in is left at all anymore. The land has been totally cleared and a gas pumps and a large building are going up. You can see my photos of it from 2002 at http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/19027.html .
O.K.
Here is something from BOXOFFICE,July 1984 on the Bowl Drive-in. West River Associates ,a group of businessmen,Bought the Bowl Drive-in with plans to put an industrial park there.
U.S. 1 & Marginal Dr, West Haven, CT 06516
The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is visible on Google Earth using historic aerial imagery.
Approx. location for this drive-in was 40 Boston Post Road. The entrance was just to west of this address, the drive-in was behind where the truck rental is now located.
Uploaded the opening day ad from April 1 1953. In Jan 3, 1957 it was sold by Berk Kruingold to Cinema Circuit.
Spent many of summer nights with my family at the Bowl. One movie sticks in my mind is watching The Beatles “Let It Be” Move in late May 1970. Then later I brought my dates here.. Great Times, so sad those days are gone….
Billboard, Oct. 16, 1954: “Seymour B. Levine, Stratford, Conn., who operates the Bowl Drive-In, West Haven, has petitioned the State commissioner of police for permission to erect a drive-in theater to accommodate 450 cars on River Street, Bridgeport, on a site adjacent to Candlelight Stadium. If permission is granted, a spring opening is planned.”
