Little is known about the Rex Theatre/Bagby Opera House. The theatre, while closed, survived until the early-1960’s urban renewal in downtown Monterey. The theatre was located above 301 Del Monte Avenue–not the present building at 301 Del Monte.

On the first floor, a saloon was located on the corner of 301 Del Monte and was operated by Herbert Schaufel who later worked as a rigger for Signal Oil in Long Beach, CA.

In the 1897-98 edition of the Julius Cahn Official Theatrical Guide, there is a “Bagby’s Opera House”. Is it this theatre, the Rex? The Mgr. was A. Gunzendorfer, it had 500 seats and was located on the second floor. Admission prices 25 cents to 75 cents; electric illumination. The proscenium opening was 22 feet wide X 14 feet high, and the stage was 18 feet deep. There were 4 musicians in the pit band. There were 2 weekly newspapers and 3 hotels for show folk. Town served by the Southern Pacific RR. The 1897 population of Monterey was 3,000.

Based on historical research I’ve done, I’m pretty sure this theatre was on Alvarado Street, not Del Monte. The street pictured above also appears to be Alvarado, during one of Monterey’s Tuesday afternoon/evening farmers markets.
