Opening in 1941, the Stockade Auto-Torium was one of the first drive-ins to be built in Virginia. As the name implies, it had stockade fences to give it a fort like appearance. Car capacity is listed at 240. The Stockade Auto-Torium closed in 1963. Today, a Burger King is located on part of the former drive-in site.

The Virginia Gazette says it was the second drive-in to be built in Virginia and the sixth to be built in America.
Was owned by Cecil S. Houck.
Uploaded some new pictures of the Stockade Auto-Torium. I think they are from the late 1950’s. It looks like they are repairing part of the fence.
Drive-In 54, these are wonderful photos. Thanks so much for sharing. First time I have ever seen shots of what it looks like. Again, thank, wsasser
Thanks..I wish I had some pictures of it when it first open in 1941. I bet it had outside blast speakers.
Actual opening date is June 9, 1941 featuring a 31x43ft screen.
On the afternoon of January 3, 1947, parts of its original screen tower suffered damage after a vehicle crashed into the tower, injuring four people including one seriously hurt. Officers confirmed that the vehicle was traveling in a high rate of speed when it spun off, missed one pole, crashed through a wall, and split off a power pole in the Stockade’s property. Dare, Virginia resident Marion Douglas Green was the driver, who was also intoxicated. He was taken by Virginia State Police custody but released on bond.
