The Fort Drive-In opened on September 1, 1966 as a single screen drive-in owned by Howell Theatres. The opening triple bill program was Henry Fonda in “Spencer’s Mountain”, Sandra Dee in “A Summers Place” & Connie Stevens in “Palm Springs Weekend”. It was equipped with 70mm & 35mm projection. In 1971 a second screen was added. The original screen was used for family movies and the second screen was dedicated to more adult oriented movies. The first movies shown on screen two were Russ Meyer’s, “The Seven Minutes” and “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”. The Fort Twin Drive-In closed in 1986. Part of the former drive-in is used as a flea market.

I never got to see any movies at the drive-in. I always read the Lynchburg paper to see what was playing at all the drive-ins around. My now husband took me to see Once Upon a Midnight (I think was the title – it was a Sidney Sheldon novel) at the twin hardtop built later on.
Opened September 1st, 1966. Grand opening ad posted.
