Is this picture correct? I thought the theater was at other end of this strip of shops but maybe my memory is faulty. I might be confusing the space with a video store that was down there. I can remember seeing Hero at Large here and also Flash Gordon.
The Hudson Plaza Shopping Center was announced in 1962. The Hudson Plaza Theatre selected August 7th, 1963 for its grand opening with “Irma la Douce.” It was originally a 900-seat single-screen theatre with Norelco 70mm projectors and Altec Lansing sound. The theatre was built by John G. Broumas Theatre Circuit. Broumas went bankrupt in 1967.
The Hudson Valley was twinned in 1979 by CATE Enterprises Circuit whbich subsequently closed it on December 17, 1981 with “Superman II” and “Galaxy of Terror.” Cramer’s Half-Size Clothing took over the spot in 1986 and the former theater space has been divided.
This reopened as a twin on June 29th, 1979.
Saw a number of movies at the Hudson Plaza during my youth. LOGAN’S RUN, IN SEARCH OF NOAH’S ARK, SEMI-TOUGH, JAWS 2, ANIMAL HOUSE, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, ALIEN, THE JERK, THE ROSE, BRUBAKER, FLASH GORDON, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK all come to mind. The theatre was twinned in 1979 and closed suddenly just after Thanksgiving 1981. Too bad, it was a really popular theatre.

I remember CinemaNational operating just the Dutchess Cinema out on Rte 44. Which has now been converted into a Blockbuster Video store. This was a very nice theater. I remeber seeing Staurday Night Fever, Looking For Mr. Goodbar and Das Boot. Aa the end of it’s operation as a theater it booked mostly art films.
The Hudson Plaza Cinema has been converted over to retail. You can clearly see it driving on Rt. 9 in the Hudson Plaza. The CinemaNational chain ran this, the Duchess Cinema, and the 9-G Drive-In for a time. CinemaNational was absorbed by USA Cinemas, which in turn was bought by Loews in 1988.
This theater was located in the Hudson Plaza. It has been converted into retail space now. Not sure when it closed, but it had been converted in to a twin. At the time of the closure it was operated by Cate (?) that also operated the Juliet in Poughkeepsie, The Mid Valley Mall in Newburgh, The Windor in Vails Gate and the Squire Theater in New Windsor. They also operated the Plaza at the Orange Plaza in Middletown. All the theaters in the Newburgh area closed (MidValley, Squire & Windsor) when the new 10plex open neared the Newburgh Mall. The 10plex was built by Ctae but UA aquired and opened it. The Juliet went independent and the Hudson Plaza & the Plaza closed before all the other theaters opened.
Hoyts bought the 10plex and operated it for a few years before closing it. This theater sat vacant for a number of years till it re-opened at the Showtime Cinemas with stadium seating and all new projection and sound equipment.
I have a 1967 Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper ad for “Doctor Zhivago,” which the theatre began showing the day after the New York City roadshow run ended. Address given is, simply, “Route 9, Poughkeepsie.” Theatre was equipped for 70mm presentations.
