What happened to the Theatre? Im in Nacogdoches right now, don’t see why they would tear it down.
I think this is the drive in south of town on 59. I see it when I come visit my mom, who lives in Nac.
GWaterman, I think you’re thinking of a different theater that’s in between Nac and Lufkin. The Lumberjack is long since demolished and has some sort of law enforcement building on the site.
I was there once in the early 70’s – I remember it as the most beautiful drive-in I had ever been to – a long, long drive through the pines from the marquee on the highway and, once past the boxoffice, you’re suddenly in a clearing in the pines and there’s the screen – no ambient light, clear bright picture, great movie-going experience…except for the movie, which I can’t seem to recall…what WAS I preoccupied with?
Any photos anyone?
Now the county jail! Approx. address for this drive-in was 2306 Douglass Road.
There’s also a bail bonds business next door, prime location! Historical aerials show the drive-in there in 82 and gone in 96.
Same drive-in? Billboard, Sept. 26, 1953: “East Texas Theaters, Inc., has purchased a 13-acre site at Nacogdoches, Tex., where it plans to construct a new drive-in theater. The circuit owns the Main and Stone Fort theaters there.”
This appears to be opened sometime in the 1960s. It was once operated by the Texas Cinema Corporation.
