The Char-Bell opened in 1924, on Main Street in Rochester. The name comes from its first owners, Charles and Belle Krieghbaum. The 780-seat theater was constructed in an existing building that formerly housed an auto dealership. Originally, in addition to silent films, the theater hosted ocassional live events. The Char-Bell was renamed the Times in 1942 after it came under new ownership.
The theater closed in 1973, but reopened a year later under new owners. In 1979, the Times was twinned. In 1985, a fire caused damage to the theater. However, the Times Cinema was repaired and remodeled and once again reopened. It remained open until closing on January 1, 2014 when it was unable to afford the cost to convert to digital projection. It reopened as the Times Theater on February 14, 2024.

This theater is closed as of 1/1/14. Digital was too expensive, although they sound like they might try to raise the money and reopen.
I photographed the Times Theater, as it is now referred to, in May 2024 and it is alive and going strong! Here is their website: https://thetimestheater.com/. A beauty of a small town theater, it looked well loved and very active!
