Broadway Cinema

The 630 seat suburban Broadway Cinema is situated amidst terraced houses in Manor Street.

It first opened in 1914 as the Manor Street Picture House and had seating in stalls and balcony areas. It was later known as the Palladium Cinema and in 1934 it became the Broadway Cinema.

It closed on 11th August 1956 and today is used as a youth training and community centre.

The Broadway Cinema opened in 1914.

In the 1940’s it seated about 650 persons. It has been out of cinema purposes since the late 1950’s.

I’m not sure the opening date was 1914; searching through newspaper archives, the only date mentioned is 1920; no mention of a cinema occurs before then. And when the Manor went for auction in 1928, 1920 is again mentioned as the opening date.
