The theater started out as a horse stable for the farmers who founded the Pike Place Market in the early-1900’s. On April 27, 1979, the space was turned into a movie theater, with old theater seats and carpeting from the original lobby of the Radio City Music Hall, New York.
The movie house closed in 1989, but re-opened two years later as the mainstage for Unexpected Productions, a nonprofit improv theater company.

When Cineplex Odeon took over operations in 1987, they had no idea how to book this theater. The previous owners had cultivated an eclectic mix of American independent and foreign film bookings, but CO threw out that policy and booked anything they could. Needless to say, audiences stayed away.
