Regent Theater

Opened December 24, 1911 as the Acme Theater. On September 18, 1913 the Acme Theater became the Broadway Theater. On August 29, 1914 it was renamed the Regent Theater. This appears to be a silent era theater that closed in 1930.

The building that this theater was located in was called the Acme Building. It was a three story commercial building. The building was designed with stores fronting onto the street with the Acme Theater at the rear. Early occupants of the Acme building included a jewelry shop and Tressman’s Millinery. Rooms upstairs were known as the Acme Hotel.

The Regent was still being listed in Film Daily Yearbook’s, 1941 and 1943 as ‘closed’. The seating capacity given is for 500.

My 1967 FDY lists these drive-ins in Billings: City-Vu, Billings Motor-Vu and Sage.

From 1917 a postcard view of 28th Street along with a view of the Regent Theater marquee in Billings. The feature being screened is the rare, first version of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms starring Mary Pickford.

News from Billings in the The August 29, 1914 issue of Moving Picture World:

“Woods & Snidow have sold the Broadway theater at Billings, Mont., to E. C. O'Keefe, manager of the Luna theater in Billings, and V. D. Caldwell of the American Bank and Trust Company of that city. Formal opening under the new management was fixed for the last of August, many changes to be made in the house in the interval. After the reopening the theater will be known as the Regent and the policy will be the ultra-features at prices slightly higher than the average admission in Billings has been. O'Keefe will continue to manage the Luna.”
