Wayne Theatre

The Wayne Theatre opened on April 18, 1921 with Marguerite Clark in “Scrambled Wives”. It was owned by Tony Macci. It was remodeled and reopened on September 7, 1933 with Slim Summerville in “Her First Mate”. By 1941 the seating capacity was 460. It was split into two smaller theatres, each with 120 seats, in the late-1970’s or very early-1980’s. It was renamed Wayne Cinema 1 & 2. It was closed by Teicher Theaters on August 11, 2014.

New operators took over and eventually renovations began. It has been de-twinned and reopened as the Wayne Theatre on November 17, 2023 with “The Marvels”.

Yes, but now it’s called the Wayne Cinema, or just Cinemas 1 & 2. I went with the old name.

The Trainor Opera House was on W. 3rd Street. It ran movies for awhile, I don’t know for how long. It burnt down in 1926. It was replaced by the State Theater which was demolished in 1981. The Wayne Theater is definitely still open but as a very nondescript twin.

If it burned in 1926, it’s possible that the Trainor Opera House had become the Strand Theatre which, according to the November 27, 1926, issue of The Piqua Daily Call had been completely destroyed by a fire the previous night, along with an adjacent building. The fire was caused by the explosion of film in the projector. The Opera House was built by the I.O.O.F. in 1873.

The 1930 Sanborn map shows it as movies. I doubt it was ever a live theater. It’s actually not very big. It’s not even as deep as the neighboring building.

Construction date on the front is 1920, although the March 1920 map shows the house on the lot.

Teicher Theatres closed all of its locations on August 11, 2014 citing Alan Teicher’s age at 80 and his concern about digital conversion away from 35mm coupled with students going back to school ended the theatre and the circuit which only had three other remaining locations in Winchester, Indiana, Bradenton, Florida, and Troy, Ohio.
