Newgulf, Texas was a company town built by the Texasgulf Sulphur Company in the eastern tip of Wharton County, Texas. At the time of its establishment in 1928, Newgulf was so isolated that the railroad was the only way in or out of town. However, Texasgulf ensured that Newgulf residents had all the conveniences of a city. This included the Texas Theater for movie viewing.

As sulphur mining activities declined, so did the town. By the 1970s, the theater and the stores in the once-thriving business district were gone. The sulphur plant closed in December 1993, and the town of Newgulf no longer exists.

The Texas Theater’s first manager was Mr. Henry Hurr. The first talkie to show at the Texas was on December 19, 1929. “Married in Hollywood” (starring J. Harold Murray and Norma Terris) was among the first talkies at the Texas.
