A fifth screen was added in June 1990 and was renamed “Linden Fiveplex Cinemas”. The theater closed for the final time on December 31, 1999, and was notable for being the last movie theater in America to close in the 20th century.
Two screens and renamed Linden I & II on June 7th and became the Linden Quad theatres on November 21st, 1986, and closed in 2000.

I remember going to the theater in 1998 and 1999 the last two years they were open it look very run down.
Last major theater in linden until the AMC opened years ago.

First film I saw at this theater was CONAN THE DESTROYER. My ex would always get mad at me when I would sing along with the HOUSE OF RECORDS promo that was spliced onto the trailer reel of every screening – markp, do you remember it?

i remember the day they closed if i remember right it was december 31, 1999 the movies playing were Stuart Little, Galaxy Quest, Toy Story 2, Bicentennial Man, and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo i think those were the last movies there.
Function shold be changed. This place was demolished years ago.
I was a projectionist here in the late 80’s until May 1995. The theatre was originally twinned in 1978. After a change in ownership in 1985, the theatre was quaded. In 1989, a 5th screen was added by splitting one of the splits (theatre 4). Was very run down in its final years, and closed for good in 1998 I think.
I remember when it was the “New Plaza” theater in the early 70’s, and a single screen theater. It even had a smoking section in the back rows on the left-hand side. Saw lots of good movies here.

Jul. 13, 2004—LINDEN, N.J. — Demolition work has begun on the former Linden Quad Cinema on North Wood Avenue, which will make way for city’s new park, the Linden Promenade, which is expected to open next year.
“This incredible project will create a place which truly represents the renaissance and rejuvenation of Linden,” said Mayor John T. Gregorio, who supports the project that is being funded by the Union County Improvement Authority.
“An outdoor theater, which will be a clam shell type with a stage and plenty of seating, will be the new home of the Linden Summer Concert Series as well as many other cultural activities and shows,” Gregorio said.
In addition to the amphitheater, the project will include two new buildings, each three stories high to house office space on the top and commercial on the ground floor, such as retail shops and restaurants. The former theater, purchased by the city, closed about four years ago.
The park will also feature a fountain displaying plaques around the perimeter to honor Linden residents.
“We would like to honor those people who have been outstanding in their commitment to Linden. A plaque with a dedication is a nice way of saying thank you. We would like to recognize the people who have volunteered their time in helping to make Linden the thriving city it is today,” Gregorio said.
The city plans to install tables with umbrellas and chairs around the fountain in the park, so people will be able to enjoy a leisurely lunch.
“We also hope to attract more business to our downtown area by attracting people who work in Linden to come down and have lunch at the Linden Promenade. We want this to be a place that people visit daily,” Gregorio said.
Gregorio said many activities currently held in front of City Hall on Wood Avenue, such as the annual cultural heritage fair, holiday tree lighting and movies in the park, will be relocated to the new park.
“Our residents are going to be very pleased with the many ways in which they can utilize this new park. It is a spectacular addition to our community,” Gregorio said.

A Wurlitzer organ, opus 1747, was installed in this theater on 9/28/1927.
i saw ‘e.t.’, ‘the magic christian’ , ‘poltergeist’ and ‘wild in the streets’ here.
It showed the ‘blue’ and ‘yellow’ installments of the controversial Swedish film ‘I Am Curious’.
May have been converted to a concert venue at one time.
Bruce Springsteen played at the “New Plaza Theater” in Linden on 11/23/71.
1943 photo can be seen on page 68 of the Arcadia Publishing book “Linden”.
I think this may be where my parents took me to see ‘American Graffiti’ when it came out in ‘73.
Listed as the Plaza in the 1951 FDY.
