Classic Comedy Club

The Classic Cinema was the first independant cinema in Auckland city for some 30 years, and was plauged by fights for product with larger exhibitors. Indeed, the local authority imposed a condition on it’s licence that it only screen films over 30 years old (this was later relaxed to 15, and then dropped in 1981).

The theatre was plain, with a flat floor and rather garish foyer.

Initially running only 16mm, the theatre developed a small following however fighting for films continued to tax the galiant owner, Jan Grefstad. Jan was a true poineer, installing the first platter in Auckland and being the first to go manager / operator. The theatre moved briefly to second run, then to porno and finally switched to video before closure and conversion to the Classic Comedy Club in October 1997.

This cinema is now a comedy bar. The most mourned theatre of Auckland was the old His Majesty’s Theatre that was built in 1902 and tragically demolished in January 1988.

Does anyone have any photo’s of the His Majesty’s Theatre?
