Capitol Theater

Neighborhood theater with a below-street-level lobby and entrance way. Elaborate animated marquee with a “fountain of light” effect.

Opened prior to 1925, by 1941 it was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. Closed in the early-1960’s. Announced to be twinned and part of the Jery Lewis circuit in the early-1970’s but nothing came of it.

Arcadia Press book “Belleville”, p 120 shows a nice ad for the theater. Feature film is “Captain Sinbad” (1963)

Heard from a friend that lives in Belleville that the Capitol was demolished along time ago. Today is just an empty lot.

In regards to this possibly becoming a Jerry Lewis Cinema, were many in that chain converted from regular theatres? I was under the impression that they were all new constructions?

I think The Capitol was the 1st movie theatre I ever attended without my parents…in the late 50’s. On Saturdays there was always a double feature + shorts + cartoons…all for thirty five cents.

Also, I was a student @ St. Peter’s grammer school in Beleville. One day the school rented the theatre so every student could see “The Song of Bernadette.” Will always remember this.
