News About This Theater
- Apr 5, 2011 — Cinema Plaza closes; last remaining theater in Hunterdon county
- May 11, 2010 — Cinema Plaza in Flemington may not have a future
This theatre was built as a dairy barn in the 1920’s and it continued in this capacity through 1965. In 1966 the property was converted to a Chevrolet dealership and continued as such through 1981.
In 1981 Dick Nathan of Nathan Theatres bought the property to replace the aging Hunterdon Theatre (single screen) nearby. He converted the new-car showroom and former milking barn into retail stores and a five-screen movie theatre. A sixth screen was added in 1992 in what was the old hay loft. The original farmhouse still stands at the back of the property. The theatre is the only one in Hunterdon County, NJ and was slated for replacement in 2006 by AmericanPlace Movies.
The Cinema Plaza was closed on March 27, 2011, and was demolished in May 2011. A Starbucks now stands on the site.

Here is an article about the closing: View link
John, I felt silly when I saw that you posted the closeing here.
Here the caption for a FB pic. that I uploaded today:
4/1/11-Cinema Plaza, Flemington, NJ-this was the last movie theater in Hunterdon County until it closed last Sunday. In Nov., 2007, I was stopped at this intersection with my kids in our old Suburban. We were on our way to the theater. A higher force stopped me at a green light. That saved me from being broadsided ( and probably killed ) by a speeding SUV running the red light on Rt. 202. I, also, now work at this same intersection during the tax season.
Sadly I also spotted the closure of this multiplex during my frequent drives through Flemington on US Highway 202. I remember the building as a car dealership in the 1970’s. The solitary film I ever saw at this theater was ET. I did not realize until reading the contributions to this site that cinema was once owned by Richard Nathan. My first real employer (outside of the paper route I had as a kid) was a Nathan owned theater in Berkeley Heights, NJ. If I still resided in the area I would have gone to this cinema for more than a solitary film. Unfortunately for the past 30 years it has been not much than a landmark along my lengthy commute. The numerous times I have driven past I noted that the cinema always screened movies immediately after their release.
Passed by today. They have begun to tear down the building, starting in the back where the DMV office once was.
IIRC my former boss John Monsport who I worked for during my days at GCC Essex Green in West Orange owned AmericanPlace Movies but apparently has now left the theater circuit business and works with his wife as licensed real estate agents.
I had live for six years in Hunterdon County before this closed in 2011, but sadly, never went to see a movie here. I remember driving by at the end when their sign read: “That’s All Folks”. Although I hadn’t grown up in the area or ever saw a movie there, it saddened me.
Hard to believe there’s no movie theater in Hunterdon anymore. I guess folks are driving up Rt. 202 to Bridgewater for the newer, update theater?
Anyway, Rest in Peace, Cinema Plaza.
Wow … I used to work at Cinema Plaza from 1998 until 2000. Like many employees, I also went there quite a bit as a customer before eventually working there. What a great time we all had there…so many wonderful (and hilarious) memories. I’m really bummed to see the entire building gone, as that area just doesn’t look the same to me anymore when I’m in town visiting.
RIP Cinema Plaza.
Do you remember the SURROUNDSOUND sign over the entrance?
Was it the Taylor Chevrolet dealership before the theater?
Actually a Starbucks now sits on that location. https://goo.gl/maps/7uZHLTxKW4KfMXqk6
