The August 19, 1916 issue of The American Contractor had a notice about a theater project, to be built at the southeast corner of Broadway and Carman Street. Carman Street was wiped out by the redevelopment of the site, but it must have been this theater, owned by the Broadway Realty Company. The original architects were the firm of Custer & Seltzer (Walter L. Custer and Charles William Seltzer.) The house probably opened in 1917, but I think we must be missing an aka, as neither a Broadway nor a Midway Theatre is listed in the 1926 or 1929 FDYs.

The Midway had rats in the 60’s. You could see them running down the aisles when the picture was on. We always put our feet up the chair in front of us.

The Midway was still in operation as late as 1978. With Federal funds for its garage project delayed, the city of Camden decided to let the theater on a monthly lease to Marcos Cotto, who presented Spanish language movies at the house, according to Boxoffice Magazine of July 10, 1978.

This was the last indoor theater to operate in Camden, surviving into the ‘70s showing B double features. Part of the local Savar chain along with the Savar a couple blocks away, the Walt Whitman in Pennsauken, the King in Gloucester City and the Garden State Drive-In in Cherry Hill—all now gone.
