News About This Theater

Ceres Cuise-In

The Auto Movies was opened in 1947, operated by Frank Lucido. It became the Modesto Drive-in on May 3, 1949. By 1950 it had been renamed Ceres Drive-In, still operated by Frank Lucido. By 1952 it was operated by Redwood-Lippert Theatres. They were still the operators in 1957. It later became a twin screen drive-in with a capacity for 350 cars.

In April 2009, it was announced that the Ceres Drive-In would be closed. It was re-opened in summer of 2020 with one screen operating, which operates as the Ceres Cruise-In. It was closed in 2022 and became a paved area for RV parking.

The Ceres reopened as a Flea Market only in 2012. But there has been some talk about showing movies again in the near future. Screen 2 is still standing, and they would have to rebuild the booth and put up a new screen in field 1 for it to happen.

There was a fire in the bio box and snack bar on 21/6/2010. There is footage of the fire on youtube. The fire may have been arson by vandals.

The pandemic has led Ripon resident Mark Stotzer to reopen the Ceres. It’s down to one screen, and it may be just a temporary thing, but it was reported by the Turlock Journal and the Modesto Bee.
