Boxoffice, Nov. 18, 1950: “PAOLA, KAS. - In hopes of an early lifting of the federal ban on amusement building, the Griffith Theatre Enterprises, owners of the Paola and Osawatomie Theatres, have purchased ten acres of land near here for a drive-in.”
Boxoffice, Oct. 27, 1956: “Bob Fellers, manager of Mid-Central Theatres, reports negotiations are under way for the circuit to dispost of some of its fringe theatres. Allied Theatres, Inc., of Perry, Okla., will take over on November 9 … the Mid-Way Drive-In between (Paola and Osawatomie). James McKenna, the son of B. J. McKenna at Manley, Inc., will have charge of the operation.”
“Chuck Thomas of Osawatomie-Paola, Kas., reports bad weather has prevented completion of a renovation program at his Midway Drive-In.” —BoxOffice, May 30, 1966
The reports of this drive-in’s demise were premature. It has been open for the 2019 summer season since Memorial Day weekend. Check out the Midway’s Facebook page for current movies.
Closed at same time I-70 in kc closed but for sale at 200 grand
A KCTV story from 2013 said the Midway opened in 1953. The 1952 Theatre Catalog didn’t list it, but the 1955 edition did.
All Catalog and IMPA references to the Midway assign it to Osawatomie, but as jwmovies noted, it claims a Paola address.
The Midway Drive-In has made the conversion to digital projection.
The address for this drive-in is 29591 West 327th Street, Paola, KS 66071.
