The Bel Air Theatre is located on the site of the former Bel-Air Drive-In in Detroit and is Detroit’s only operating first run movie theatre. The theatre opened April 22, 1988. It was closed by AMC Theatres in September of 2000 and was completely renovated by Phoenix Theatres and re-opened on April 6, 2001.
The theatre now has digital sound in all auditoriums and the premiere auditorium has a complete eight channel SDDS Sony digital system (one of only two systems in the Detroit market). It was taken over by independent management in 2009 and renamed Bel Air Luxury Cinema.
In 2016, the Bel Air Luxury Cinema had completed a full remodel with all new luxury high back rockers, recliners, glittery decor throughout, and a giant custom-made chandelier.
