The Capawock is listed in the 1927 Film Daily Yearbook as having 320 seats, open 2 days per week.
The street view and address is incorrect. The address should be 45 Main Street.
The Capawock each September is host to the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival: www.mvfilmfest.com There are photos of its exterior and interior on our Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Marthas-Vineyard-International-Film-Festival/200095618948?sk=photos
It currently only has approx. 220 seats.
i was there last week. it shows movies 2 to 3 times per day in the afternoon and late evening. the small staff allowed me to walk into the plain auditorium and snap a few pix. they said it has 220 pictures as correctly stated above. the other staff member thought it had 248 seats…he was corrected with 220. perhaps they did a handicapped remodel?
Exciting news: A new nonprofit foundation is 60 percent to its fundraising goal to reopen the Capawock, as well as the Strand Theatre in nearby Oak Bluffs! The deadline is March 31 if the theaters are to reopen by Memorial Day — please share this information with your fellow single-screen aficionados: the secure donation link is at http://www.mvtheaterfoundation.org/take-action/ along with contact info and more photos.
A Capawock Theatre at Vineyard Haven is listed in the 1918 New England Business Directory and Gazetteer.
The Capawock reopened in late-May after refurbishment, with a Carly Simon concert on stage.
The Capawock Theater is currently closed and is available for rentals. I discovered this theater on my vacation to Martha’s Vineyard,God willing it doesn’t get demolished, theaters like this are a dieing breed and are almost extinct. I wish it a hopeful future, someone with resources please come save it.
