The Movies - Ulysses KS b 2016-01-19

The Crocker Theatre was built in 1948 and was designed by architectural firm Mann & Company of Hutchinson, KS. It was remodeled sometime in the 1970’s. This theatre is a bit eccentric, but remains a great place to catch a movie. In fact, The Movies dominates downtown Ulysses, KS. Due to its long marquee and bright colors, you just can’t miss it! This one’s in great shape as are many of the western Kansas theatres because of the dry climate. This is a great theatre!

Wow! Eccentric is a good word for this one! Lots of Pink & mirrored surfaces, definitely unique & very retro! I’ll have to stop in for a peek next time I’m headed for Colorado.

Oh no. They’ve toned down the exterior with a new paint job. I hope they didn’t change the interior. This is a fun theatre. It needs to stay “eccentric.”

The Film Daily Yearbook, 1950 edition lists the Grant Theatre, 237 seats, as the only theatre in Ulysses. I presume The Movies was originally known as the Grant Theatre?

The Movies, formally the Crocker Theatre was built in 1948.The Grant Theatre was Built in the early 30’s. The Crocker family run the Grant Theatre till 1950 when they closed it. They run both theatres for several years. The building that housed the Grant Theatre has been used for several different retail stores and many years as a Daylight Donut shop, which the buidinf is now for lease or sale. The Daylifgt Donut Shop moved to a new location. My self and my wife Norma Dudley purchased The Crocker Theatre From C.V. Crocker in 1972 and changed the name to The Movies in 1976 and still operating it today. posted by dudley on May21, 2005 at 2:10pm

My wife and I visited The Movies Theatre a few weeks ago. I’m happy to report that the inside is still “eccentric.” And congrats on being named the “most improved business” in Ulysses, Ks. Mr. Dudley. Actually, this is a great theatre with superb picture and sound quality. And believe me, it has atmosphere even if the outside paint job is a bit tamer. Cindy and I also met Mr. Dudley who has been in the movie business much longer than he has owned his theatre. Thank you for talking to us. We had a great time.

Attended a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at The Movies on a Tuesday night. I’m happy to see older, small town venues adapt and survive. Excellent projection, comfy chairs with cup holders, ultra low cost concessions, friendly staff – what’s not to like? I was disappointed that the room was so dark before the movie that I couldn’t really see it – but the squares of carpet on the wall do qualify as eccentric. Well worth the visit.
