For decades this theater was known locally as “The Garlic” because of the heavy Italian population in the old Grant Works neighborhood of Cicero that attended the silent films there.

I don’t have access to the map view from this computer. Is the theater building still vacant?
This address is wrong. It was on 49th Court just south of 14th St. on the west side of the street. I went to St. Anthony’s Catholic school a block south of there throughout the 60s and walked past it every day.
It was demolished in the early 60s and a house was moved, yes, moved onto the property. Back then it wasn’t unusual for houses to be moved off one property to another, and I remember two instances of this in that area in the early 60s. Pretty unforgettable to see a house going down the street.
Since I last posted in May, the address has been corrected to 1404 S. 49th Ct., which sounds right. The map link is for 1466, which puts it right at 15th St, which is not where it was.
A Mrs. R. D. Frazier owned the GRANT Theatre in 1917.
Does anyone remember the name of the lithuanian restaurant that was near the theater?
Perhaps the first cinema experience for me. As a very young boy, maybe 6 or 7, my father took myself and my brother to see Creature From The Black Lagoon at the Grant. Walking home in darkness of the evening, pops delighted in spooking both of us with his antics. I agree with virino, that the address of 1404 sounds about right. On 49th Ct, west side of the street, just south of 14th St.
