Skyline Drive-In 200 Burwood Highway, Melbourne, VIC
The Skyline Drive-In tower in Burwood circa 1954.
The question of the era - If the world had gone wide-screen by 1954, why did the Burwood drive-in open with a standard ratio screen?
For those technically minded the screen installed at Burwood was the exact Academy Ratio (1.33:1) - It was not possible to screen anamorphic material during this period given the screens format - The theatre would expand and widened the original screen structure so that it was suitable for screening CinemaScope movies approximately 18 months after the opening.
