St. James Theatre

Most major MGM releases of the 1960s launched at the St James – films like The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, Shoes of the Fisherman and the musical version of Goodbye Mr Chips. Some titles were diverted to the Ascot theater when 70mm prints were available: GWTW, Far From The Madding Crowd and Ryan’s Daughter. But MGM’s biggest hit of the 60s was “Doctor Zhivago” which premiered at the St James 4 May 1966 and ran until 22 December when it transferred to the Metro Kings Cross (while the St James screened Disney’s “That Darn Cat” simultaneously with the Ascot for Xmas). Zhivago concluded its exclusive season at Kings Cross 25 October 1967 after a total run of 77 weeks. But the David Lean epic wasn’t finished yet, as it came back to the city for Xmas – now in 70mm at the Ascot starting 21 December and running 9 weeks until 21 February 1968.
