Andamooka Drive-In Old Drive-In Road, Andamooka, SA
The history of the Andamooka Drive-In and its owners, Gino and Sylvana Scopel, captures a unique era when the remote opal-mining town of South Australia was experiencing a mid-century population boom.
• The Drive-In’s History - Located off Old Drive-In Road in Andamooka, the theater was built to entertain the isolated community of opal miners, their families, and European post-WWII migrants who flocked to the region.
• The drive-in was a single-screen venue. Reflecting the rugged, makeshift nature of early Andamooka, it uniquely featured outdoor seating for walk-ins alongside standard car spaces, allowing local miners without vehicles to enjoy the movies.
• Like many of Australia’s hundreds of rural drive-ins, it eventually closed and was demolished as home televisions and VCRs grew popular. Today, the site lives on through local memory and the name of Old Drive-In Road.
• The Acquisition: Gino Antonio Scopel and his wife Sylvana Scopel formally acquired the Andamooka Drive-In cinema in 1971.
• Prior to running the cinema, Gino Scopel was well-integrated into the local frontier community. South Australian government gazettes show he held residential site leases in the Andamooka pastoral block as early as 1967 and 1968.
