Former Villard Hotel bellhop Jacob “Jackie” Nicholas Hecker burns down the Villard Hotel on January 20, 1949 and that building on the left is the former Strand Theatre turned Red Owl which is decimated in the famous fire. Very little of either building remained so both were soon demolished. Hecker would then admit to burning down the other downtown hotel, the St. Charles Hotel a year later admitting to both arsons.
