Before Downtown took over this building in Hindley Street it was known as The State Picture Theatre. This photo from the State Library of South Australia was taken in 1957 and shows the newly refurbished cinema which started life as the Wondergraph in 1913. It then became the Civic Theatre/New Civic Theatre from 1932 until 1957. Rebuilt to include CinemaScope and air conditioning, it reopened as the State Theatre, which closed in 1977 and re-opened in the ‘80s as Downtown.
