Grand opening ads for the Lyric’s sister a block away and across the street. It’s the new Star Theatre in 1909. Lots of ad copy about how it’s Iowa’s safest theater. The safer theaters had egresses at all four sides. The hemmed-in Lyric went with a concrete tunnel passage. In February of 1916, the fire chief shut down the venue over safety issues that were never addressed as the Star faded.
