The renovated Empress as a calendar repertory theatre in the 1980’s. Several program changes every week, everything from Buster Keaton to Kurosawa to The Marx Brothers to James Dean to John Waters to hardcore porn was featured. Like most of the other calendar rep theatres, video and changing movie tastes led to the demise of this programming. Second run mainstream double features at bargain prices eventually replaced this policy at the Empress to the disappointment of North Bay film buffs.
