Sidney Myer Music Bowl Linlithgow Avenue, Melbourne, VIC - 1967
On March 12, 1967 The Seekers performed (during Melbourne’s annual Moomba festival) before the largest crowd in the history of The Sidney Myer Music Bowl. 200,000 people.
The Seekers were not scheduled to perform (as special guests at Music for the People) until 3:15 pm, yet crowds started gathering at the Bowl as early as six in the morning; by ten, the Bowl was swamped with tens of thousands of people jostling for a space in the sun; and by the time The Seekers walked on stage, the Bowl had virtually disappeared under a sea of more than 200,000 people, the largest crowd in the venue’s history.
Records were broken that day - In fact, The Seekers pulled the largest concert crowd in Australia’s history and to this day they still hold the record for the largest concert crowd in the southern hemisphere. The Seekers performed ‘Come the Day’, ‘Morningtown Ride’, ‘A World of Our Own’, ‘The Leaving of Liverpool’, ‘Red Rubber Ball’, and ‘The Carnival Is Over’. For an encore, they sang ‘Georgy Girl’ and received a sustained standing ovation. - Judith Durham Official
