Princess Theatre 57 Brisbane Street, Launceston, TAS
The Princess Theatre was opened on 30th August 1911.
It was designed by Marino Lucas with decorations by J & T. Gunn. By 1912 it was screening Spencer’s Pictures. In 1920 it was taken over by Greater Union.
In 1938 it was taken over by Hoyts and in 1939 it was taken over by independent operators and was remodelled in an Art Deco style, again the work of J & T. Gunn with architect Charles Neville Hollinshed. By 1946 it was again operated by Hoyts.
In 1970 the Princess Theatre was purchased by the local council and it was re-opened on 17th November 1970 as a live theatre with the Royal Australian Ballet performing. In 1998 it was taken over by Theatre North - Notes by Ken Roe
