After passing the bevelled glass and polished wood entrance doors, one of which was usually left open on hot days to entice passers-by into the air-conditioned theatre as they felt the blast of cool air, patrons would enter the tiled ticket lobby, mount a couple of marble steps, and cross the deep carpet to THIS, with its huge Italian marble eagle about to take off over their heads. Perhaps it was really Zeus about to kidnap Ganymedes, because this was truly Heaven to me and many thousands of others.
The eagle is now in the palace of an Arab prince who paid a very great deal of money for it.
The photograph is from the collection of the Australian Cinema and Theatre Society, and from official photographs taken for Hoyts Theatres. It may not be used commercially under any circumstances.
