State Cinema 375 Elizabeth Street, North Hobart, Hobart, TAS - 2022

John Kelly - Councillor for Hobart - September 21, 2022 20 years ago today was what I refer to as ‘The State Cinema Independence Day.This was the day I nervously purchased the old, one screen, once loved but forgotten little cinema up the north end of town.

Gough Whitlam and Philip Adams actually saved the State from imminent closure in 1984 when it was operated by the Aust Film Institute until my entry in 2002. The State, or the North Hobart Picture Palace as it was originally known, was built in 1913.

I quickly realised after the purchase that it was a matter of getting big or getting out, so for the next 15 years I dugout, built upwards, sideways and downwards, invested in digital technology, took some ridiculous risks and came out the other end with 12 screens, a rooftop cinema, cafe/bar, bookstore and over 250,000 patrons a year.

Taking a sideways step two years ago I leased out the operation but have retained ownership of the building. I am honored to be part of the State Cinema history and to remain as custodian of this beautiful art deco building complete with the modern additions. I thank all those patrons and staff who have made the State the beating heart of North Hobart and wish it all the best for another 100 years. LONG LIVE THE STATE!
