Hoyts Granville
Built at a cost of around 20,000 pounds, an invitational opening of Granville Cinema took place on Monday 28th April 1924. The official opening was a charity fund raiser the following evening. 7000 pound Western Electric sound arrived 7th August 1929. CinemaScope was introduced (simultaneously with the Crest) 23rd October 1954 with “The Robe” (which transferred to the Castle 27th October). The cinema ceased normal commercial screenings 3rd February 1962. Some foreign language showings were subsequently tried unsuccessfully. “42nd Street” screened in September 1933 – see FOH photo in this collection.
