Hoyts Granville
Live performers were often added for extra appeal in the early years. Here Charles E. Lawrence (1885-1968) is given star billing over a Hollywood double feature in September 1931. Famous at the time for his community sing-a-longs, Lawrence had moved from vaudeville to radio in 1926. A few weeks after his Granville appearance, he was appointed by Ken Hall as commentator of the initial Cinesound Review newsreel. His style of light-hearted banter was well suited to the medium, so he continued in that role for more than 20 years. The rival Australian Movietone News would soon appoint another radio man – Jack Davey – who possessed similar skills.
