Los Cerritos Center (ca. 1970s)
“Los Cerritos seeks to preserve our natural environment and contribute its share to the nation’s interest in ecology by providing a park-like atmosphere around its principal buildings.”—Ernest W. Hahn, Developer (Long Beach Independent/Press Telegram, September 12, 1971)
UA Mall Cinemas (left, background) was centrally located deep inside one of the original corridors. Los Cerritos Center’s signature stain glass, according to great American shopping mall magnate Ernest Hahn, was to provide “an enticing, inviting environment with a ‘bazaar’ feeling.” (Id.) Similarly, efforts were made to maximize the center’s beautiful landscaping and minimize entranceway clutter. UA Mall had no exterior-mall entry (except for a back service door accessing the projection booth) and no parking lot marquee. “All signing will be eliminated except for the majors,” said Hahn, “with no advertising to appear on the exteriors of buildings. The buildings will provide a backdrop to the plantings themselves.” (Id.)
