Saw several movies here while ‘down the shore’ as a youth, most memorably Red Dawn, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and A View to a Kill. Also saw some bad ones like European Vacation and The Man With One Red Shoe. Three theaters were side to side and I don’t recall any differences between them.
Definitely was open in 1977, I remember seeing Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo here as a 7 year old in the summer. Can’t recall much else about the experience however, not even the film.
Saw Tron here in 1982 and Ghostbusters in 1984. Other films screening at the time were Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy (82) and Karate Kid (84). I recall the layout with the box office on the outside as mentioned in the description, in 1984 both films were so popular the ticket line streched out into the parking lot. In their advertisements I believe they used a sophisticated cat as a logo. As you entered concessions was in a long row and theater access was side-by-side. Both auditoriums were large, I don’t recall any balcony.
The Entertainment Cinemas logo has now permanently replaced Lowes on the top of the parking lot sign. However, on the front on the cinema itself all they’ve done is take off the “LOEWS” … it still says “THEATRES” in the Loews font.
A banner has been placed over the sign, where the “Loews” used to be now it somewhat unintelligibly says “Entertainment Cinemas.” Other than that everything looks the same. The Loews spotlights are still up there.
I used to go to this theater for the 70MM back in the late 80’s/early 90’s even though I lived 40 minutes away. Hellraiser II and Terminator 2 both made a much bigger impression on me. Also remember attending a showing of Big Top PeeWee with a virutal tornado going on outside while PeeWee attempted to deal with the same onscreen. Also remember it as the only place in the So Jersey area screening Do The Right Thing.
