I saw Metropolis at the FF but seeing it again at the Ziegfeld should be a great experience. Will this be the first time a silent film screened at this theatre?
Great time last night at the Ziegfeld. I have seen this film at other venues (Loews Jersey, Film Forum) but never with an audiance so into the film. Hope TCM can come back to the Ziegfeld again.
The “Oriental”, The “Benson” and the “Deluxe” all within a few blocks of each other. Never a problem going to the movies back in the 60’s and 70’s. I spent many an eveing at those three neighborhood theatres. Sadly all three are now history.
I saw the Jolson Story at the Ziegfeld and the picture looked pretty good. Do not think anything was cut off the top or bottom of the screen. Since I had seen the film many times before on TV I know I would have noticed if there was a problem with the film.
The Film Forum was forced to close during their SciFi festival. When the Forum reopened I believe they continued with the festival at the current location.
On the DVD of the Laurel & Hardy film “A Haunting We Will Go” there is a “Movietone” newsreel showing the opening day for this theatre in 1940.
Above the entrance to the drug store there is still some ornamentaion near the top of the building. Nothing remains inside.
I never went to this theatre but I did go to the Bowling Alley that was under it. The Alley was still open in the 1990’s but is now closed.
There are two versions of “Baby Face”. I wonder if the Jersey will be screening the “wilder” version that the Film Forum screened last year?
Great line up of films for the Loew’s “Pre-code” weekend.
Fri. Jan.28. 8:00 PM Double feature of “Freaks” and “She Done Him Wrong”
Sat. Jan.29. 6:30 PM “Morocco"
8:30 PM "Baby Face”
I agree. Why not “White Christmas”? That film would have looked super on the big screen.
It was digital. I believe I read somewhere that all showings of this film are digital.

For a 1930 price I would.
Look closely to the right of the entrance. There was a Chevrolet dealership next door to the Loews in 1930.
Why not screen some Vitaphone shorts using that projector?

That is true. That is why no events are scheduled in July & August at the Loews.
Liked the print of “Funny Girl” but unfortunatly the curtain was not used at the 1 PM show on Thursday.
Thanks Bill for the review of “Funny Girl”. I plan to attend the 1 PM screening today.
Did anyone go to the screening of “Funny Girl?” How was the print? So far all the posts have been about WSS.
Too bad the only one of the great theatres you mentioned (Loews Jersey) still screens films as part of their schedule.

I believe it was 1991 or 1992.
Will there be a classic film series this spring at the Ziegfeld? Anyone hear anything?
Everything completely gutted out except for the side walls.
I heard from someone I know who works at the Loews that they are trying to get “Raiders Of The Lost Ark” for Dec.6.

The “Sommer Highway Theatre” sign is still intact. It can be seen above where the marquee used to be.
