Went there in the late 50’s to see the first 3d movie Bwana Devil. Glasses were cardboard and cellophane. Spears poked toward the audience.

Is this the theatre that had a sky scene showing a bird slowly moving across the ceiling?

It was 1950 or ‘51 when a few of us hooked school and went to the Hippodrome. I remember a big guy, a commedian, throwing himself off the stage into the aisle. Later, having breakfast across the street, he came in and was very loud and rude. Thinking it was Jackie Gleason.

In the early 1940’s the Colonial Theatre, as I recall was really the grandest at that time. Grand enough to attract the very famous magician, Harry Blackstone. My Grandmother and a neighbor lady made new curtains for the Colonial. The curtains were manufactured in a row house across from Edward Hand jr. High School on South Ann Street. . There was a bit of a delay as the neighbor lady ran a sewing machine needle through her thumb.

In the early 1940’s, as a youth, I went to all the theatres on North Queen St. The one I remember seeing at the Capital was Kon Tiki but also saw a Shirly Temple movie and recall the theme song but forget the title. Wish I knew! Saw Harry Blackstone (Magician) at the Colonial and many Saturday morning shows at the Hamilton. My mother would go there in the early 1900’s and spoke of the “peanut gallery” in the balcony.
