The Strand Theater is still open (2024) and has been running for years. It received a grant from NYSCA plus funding from many locals via Kickstarter in 2013 during the ‘go digital or go dark’ era. The theater is seasonal, operating as a first-run theater from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with occasional special events during other parts of the year (Halloween or Christmas).
I’ve done a silent film event there every summer since 2017.
The theater does not have a website, but their FaceBook page usually has current info, and you can also look for what’s playing on Google or Fandango etc.
Also – this theater originally opened in the 1920s.
Here are some 2009 photos of the Sag Harbor theater, inside and out, plus a night shot to show the neon sign lit up. Is the platform stage inside built over a former orchestra pit or just the regular floor? Was there a theatre organ in here when it opened?
There is a film series held there on Tuesday evenings, run by the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts. I’ve been booked to accompany a show on Oct 23 of the silent Phantom of the Opera, and will aim to take pics of the theater and post them here.
FYI I will be using a virtual Wurlitzer which runs on a laptop, and a midi keyboard and midi organ pedals for the show.
