I remember the Varsity, as well…. I believe it shows “Art” films" now? I’d have to look it up. I remember when it showed “main line” films too. (I was stationed at Pearl from 80 to 84, and my brother was there from about 78 to 82.) I met the late Pat Morita at an appearance for “The Karate Kid” he did at the Varsity. I also remember when they completely remodeled the Waikiki 3. The grand opening movie was Superman 3.“ Crummy movie, but it sounded great. :)

Let me tell you, Wes did one hell of a job. The sound at the Waikiki #3 was great, too, but the Cinerama was built for great sound. It would really add to the movie experience.

Just a quick comment on the Star Wars thread….. The movie I remember most was “The Empire Strikes back.” My brother and I were watching the scene where it was raining on Dagobah, and the sound was so real, my brother and I looked at each other like…. “Is it raining in the theatre?” :) A true loss for the community.

Thanks, LM….. I still have family in Eureka, but don’t make it up there as often as I’d like to. It’s nice to see that the Theatre is starting to come around. I spent a LOT of afternoons and evenings at that place growing up.

For the person that said that the theater is not an Art Deco style, I disagree. In 1993, the Eureka Theater received an ADSC (Art Deco Society of California) Preservation Award.

In April 2003, Bob Rickard received an ADSC Certificate of Appreciation for leading the effort to restore and preserve the Eureka Theater.

The ADSC’s Preservation Awards honor those who have helped preserve and restore buildings and memorabilia from the Art Deco era, which flourished from the 1920’s through the early 1940’s.

Saw something funny on the news the other day…. While the temps in Stockton were hovering in the hundered and teens, the marquee on the theater was advertising the play “Some like it hot.” Great timing, eh?? :)

The historic Fox theater will soon be getting a name change. Local businessman/developer/philantropist Alex Spanos has donated $500,000 toward the Fox’s current renovation project. The catch?? The theater has to be named after Spanos' dear friend, Bob Hope.

I’m not sure of the exact name, but I believe that it will be called the “Fox California Bob Hope Theater.”

Now aint that a mouthful???
