Another note:

My Uncle told me also, that the theatre started attracting a “rough” element, which was in part due, to a bar opening up nearby called “Roy Hell’s.”

He said there fights, stabbings, and gunfire and murders there. It made for a bad neighbor, for the movie theatre.

My uncle recalls that the mountain people living in CABBAGETOWN, used to see movies at this theatre. It was a huge joy, after working hours upon hours, in the mill.

He remembers is muchly… That others do, will be a blessing to him…

THANKS!

Gonna be heading up that way pretty soon. Nice city. You can have you choice of either “slider”—-Krystal OR White Castle!

Plus you have my fave pizza of all-time: Sir Pizza

There’s another institution, that happens to be owned by friend’s of my family. Arnold’s Country Kitchen. Oh, the home-cooking! Yum!

Too bad the theatre was torn down.

Well, DOONYMAN we know she shut the doors in 1998 with “Deep Impact."
Seems like the 24 has been there a good, long time to me. I would guess it likely had to be going under construction by 2000. I dated a gal that lived near there around 2002 or ‘03. I am sure it was already giving off the neon glow by then.

Maybe someone else has a better memory, than me!

Mike—-you sure “Flesh Gordon” wasn’t playing across the street, at the former Jerry Lewis cinema>? It was already getting kinda seedy about that time. IIRC, that shopping center was the original home to Tower package store, as well.

This mega-monster sits on sacred ground for me. Saw many a movie at this classic drive-in.

One B-movie horrorfest marathon, included “The Toolbox Murders” & “Mansion Of The Doomed.” Circa early/mid 80’s IIRC.

I still see movies at the 24, but it’s not “fun.” Sometimes even dangerous.

Two years ago, there was a gang related incident in the parking lot, that resulted in one death, and several wounded. I actually heard the slugs whizzing by, and took cover behind my vehicle, while securing my Glock from my trunk.

A re-work of “The Hills Have Eyes”, isn’t worth getting shot over…

I saw “Blackhawk Down” there. I believe it had started the dollar circulation by then. The building reminded me of 70’s cheese, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Glad I got to experience it…

Interesting to hear it was a cousin, to the Friday’s Plaza theatre.

I would love to have that picture of the Cherokee, for my collection. Looks like Mr. Malone has it “spaceballed” unfortunately.

That theatre, and the mall itself has much history to it, especially of my youth.

I hate to hear of the fire…

I saw the goth-metal band Type O Negative there in 1996 (IIRC). It was a great place for a show. I loved the building, even if it didn’t look like much from the outside.

Huge blow for Athens…
