I’m still hanging in here. Thank you for all comments. My best memory of the theater was watching a film, and heading to Weiles Ice cream, or vice versa. Loved the pink mosaic glass water fountain. I had to stand on the step since I am a shortie. They are golden memories.
Thank you for the additional information. I couldn’t ever be 100% certain that the pink glass mirror tiles by the drinking fountain were at Langley, or Hyattsville.
Bryan, I clicked your link, and I went to the site. I typed in “Hyattsville Theater” and found nothing. However, when I typed in Hyattsville TheatRE" the image came up, and there were my statues !!!
I don’t recall them being so large, but there they are. I have to figure out the lighting. Thanks so much. Thank you all for helping.
Thanks to each of you for sharing pictures, and memories. I am in Arizona now about an hour from Vegas, and they actually have drive ins. I haven’t come across an old theatre, yet. There ought to be a law that buildings are built in pairs, just in case something happens to one. And there should be laws against allowing them to deteriorate.
The photo link didn’t work. I am amazed that Hyattsville images remain so illusive. It was such a cool theater, and torn down waaaay too soon. I vaguely recall being inside.
Thank you. Maybe the statues were in Hyattsville. I know that they were illuminated by an ultraviolet light, can’t recall if lit from above, side, or from below, but I am sure they were Greek statues, and were on either side of the screen. Could have been Langley. The little details made such a difference. Ushers were the norm back then.
Did Greenbelt have the plaster lady statues up by the screen ? I am trying to find out who had those. There was a violet light shining on them. Langley had the pink glass mirrors around the water fountain. I believe Greenbelt may have had a clock down mear the screen by the exit signs. Old theatres had neat nooks and crannies. I get Hyattsville interiors mixed up, too. Old memories overlap.
I used to go watch the Hammer horror movies, and attend kiddie matinees there. It was a quarter. I purchased some candies that were like large size M and M’s. The floor was often sticky, and I didn’t feel quite right unless I was hit in the back of the head at least once with a Root Beer Barrel or Dots. The popcorn was out of this world, along with such films as “The Blob” and “Mole People.”
I recall a frozen custard place with a plaster polar bear near the Hyattsville theater, and a Howard Johnson’s near it, too. We always walked to the theater from Calvert Holmes ERCO ? aircraft housing. On a recent trip to Maryland, I tried to pinpoint where it had been, and got frustrated by all the drastic changes along US # one. It’s a heavy lost feeling, sometimes.
Do any of you remember the water fountain ? It was a drinking fountain nestled by a wall with pretty pale pink mirror rectangles. I was so little, I had to stand on a wood box to sip some ice cold water. I thought it was a classy touch, and I vaguely recall 2 ? small white statues of greek ? women like Venus de Milo. They were up near the screen with a violet light shining on them. I may also recall a clock, too, near the screen, but, it’s easy to confuse memories, since I also frequented Greenbelt, and Hyattsville theaters. I am 62 years old.

Nice postcard ! Lots of space, and pretty trees. Ah, the old days.

Oh, I hope there is a planet named Theatre somewhere in this omniverse. We will find all of our favorites, preserved…..

I can’t get the pictures to enlarge. Looks like a good article, though.
Thank you, Lost Memory. I am glad you posted that. I will tell friends of mine to go look at it.
