Can you please send me the pic? I attended Mifflin and used to enjoy the Alden. Great matinees! I lived in the Abbottsford housing project off of Henry ave. Mr. Rudolph was my principle. He was a teacher of my mothers in a South Philly school when she was a kid. I was born in 1956.
Ken, yes your Grandmother lived in East Falls. Did your Mom also live in East Falls? If so how old is she? I am 49 and used to go to Thomas Mifflin school on Midvale and Conrad.
Robert,
You sure sound like you were very proud of the Theatre. Before videos your theatre was the only place I knew in NYC that played a lot of the movies I liked. Technology is great, but I sure miss all of the old theatres. I grew up in Philadelphia and remember other theaters on this website I used to go as a kid, Alden and Cambria. I now live outside of Baltimore MD. Did you stay in NYC and the movie business?
Robert,
You guys ran a great theatre. I remember the waiting in small lobby before the auidence left. Nice looking bunch of people used to go to this theatre. I used to get off at the Christopher street station and walk to the Threatre. On 8th street there was a threatre that always had the Rocky Horror Picture show playing. Pick up a slice of Pizza at Ben’s.
I used to go to this theatre when I was stationed in New York in the late 1970s early 1980s. I was a big movie buff back then. They used to highlight directors and their movies. I saw Taxi Driver/Mean Streets one night and a couple of Terence Malick movies on another day. Boy, I have not been to NYC in 20 years. Heard that Times square is all cleaned up. I could tell you some stories about my young single days in NYC.
The neighborhood changed really fast back in the early 1960’s. On those hot summer nights I remember hearing police sirens most of the night. The Cambria Threatre then became a Black church or spritual center. My grandmother stilled live in the neighborhood until see died. It is funny how you seem to forget things as you get older and other memories become clearer.
I used to go to the Cambria Theatre in the early 1960s. We lived nearby on Clearfield St. I went to John Greenleaf Whittier school then. Last movie I probably in saw was sometime around 1962. One of the movies I remember seeing there was “The Village of the Damned”. The neighborhood went to pot and still is a very dangerous place. We moved a few miles away in East Falls neighborhood.
The Alden was also a big part of my life. It looks like Walt Price and I are about the same age (48). We used to play in Mifflin’s rock garden after the matinee. My email is if anyone wants to talk about the Alden and old East Falls.
Tony

PS. The Alden was open well after 1965. Probably until the late 1970s.
